Depends on the field type.

If you paste the link into a plain Text field (e.g. the Subject field of the Memo form), the result will be as you are describing it. On the other hand, if you paste the link into a Rich Text field (e.g. the Body field of the Memo form), it will appear as a database link hotspot.

I just tested with my own Notes 8.5.3 Standard Client to verify that it still behaves like that.
